RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Similar to the famous comic convention, or better known as comic-con, Rapid City has its own convention.
Dakota mini nerd con is an event originally created in 2018 at the Rapid City Public Library. It happened twice a year until the pandemic. Once COVID hit, the convention began looking to expand, which led to its collaboration with another nonprofit that matched its mission, The Cave Collective.
âConventions are a lot of fun, but they’re not very accessible to everyone,â said Morgan Chamberlain, Dakota mini nerd-con board member, âWe wanted to bring people together as a free event so that , no matter how much money you have, you are free to come with us and I think it is a very good cause.
Mini con’s mission is to create a community for people with similar interests, while also offering an invite to people who may not have the same hobbies, but who are also interested in learning.
âGo from a big city where everyone is busy with their own business, to Rapid where things are slower and more together. I ended up finding more than I had even in the big city because the community is the most important reason we do all of this, âChamberlain said.
This is the event’s first year at The Cave Collective and is now able to implement vendors, they hosted 10 local vendors at the event, including local writers and artists.
This weekend … they’re hosting a variety of panels, such as cosplay and info classes, contests, and games.
âI just feel more comfortable in your skin too, I feel like. I think it’s a huge help and I wish I had something like that when I was younger, but I am really happy to have it now, âChamberlain said.
