Two goals for Gillingham striker Joe Gbode for loan side Hastings United in 4-1 win over Brightlingsea Regent

Gillingham’s teenage striker Joe Gbode scored twice on his debut for Hastings United.

Gbode also walked away with the man of the match accolade on a good day for the 17-year-old after joining the club ahead of the weekend on a short-term loan deal.

The Isthmian Premier Hastings side – whose squad includes former player and youth boss Craig Stone in their ranks – secured a 4-1 victory over Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday at their home ground of Pilot Field.

As the Gills battled for League Two goals again at Carlisle on Saturday, Gbode showed he knew where the net was in his first appearance for his new club, playing 75 minutes and scoring twice.

His opening goal tied the score at 1-1 after finding the bottom corner of the edge of the box and he added another in the 69th minute by driving into the box and hitting the net from a tight angle.

Gbode came off the bench for the Gills in their opener against AFC Wimbledon and was twice named as an unused substitute by manager Neil Harris before being sent off. He made four senior appearances for the club, all from the bench. His debut for Gillingham came in the FA Cup last season and he also played twice in League One.

He has already had loan experience at Margate and Folkestone.

Young fellow Gills Bailey Akehurst had also recently joined Hastings on loan, but his time there has already been cut short by injury. He damaged knee ligaments after playing in their game against Aveley.
